Holiday Traditions Kids Can Enjoy All Season Long
Some of my favorite memories as a child come from standing on a kitchen stool, baking with my mom and grandma. Now, as a mom of two, I’ve made it a priority to pass that tradition on. Baking will always be the heart of our holidays, but over the years my girls and our friends have created new traditions that bring just as much meaning.
If you are looking for age-appropriate ways to include your kids or grandkids in the festivities, here are five simple and heartfelt ideas your gluten-free family can enjoy together.
Create Small Gratitude Packages
Kids love giving gifts they helped make. Assemble tiny thank-you bundles for friends, family, neighbors, and teachers. These can be simple items like a mini skincare kit, homemade cookies, granola, or a small jar of hot cocoa mix with gluten-free ingredients. These projects are quick, affordable, and fun for kids of all ages.
Share Stories Over Cocoa
Choose an evening to swap stories from the past year. Each person shares one memory that was meaningful, funny, or surprising. Sip cocoa or cider while you take turns reflecting. For little ones who cannot verbalize their memory yet invite them to draw a picture. This is a cozy and simple way to connect and reflect before the new year begins.
Make a Yearly Family Ornament
Handmade ornaments are a beautiful way to mark each year. Create a thumbprint design, a small photo collage, or another simple keepsake to hang on the tree. These ornaments become a time capsule your family will look forward to unpacking each December. This tradition also allows gluten-free kids to be fully included without any substitutions or barriers.
Hold a Holiday Decoration Yes Day
Give each child one decorating task they get to take ownership of and say yes to their choice. It might be placing ornaments, wrapping ribbons on the banister, choosing the music, tying bows, planning part of the menu, or helping set up a centerpiece. The goal is not perfection. It is pride, confidence, and involvement. Those toddler-created clusters of ornaments on the bottom half of the tree will become some of your most treasured holiday photos.
Bake Gluten-Free Treats Together
Holiday baking is a tradition that creates lifelong memories. Let the kids help choose gluten-free mixes or ingredients, measure, stir, and sample (safely). Start with simple recipes such as poke cakes, which are easy and interactive for younger kids. Sugar cookies are always a hit, whether you use cut-and-bake dough or make them from scratch. Older kids can try cinnamon rolls, pies, or other family favorites. Holiday baking is an opportunity to learn new skills, discover new flavors, and celebrate safely together.
