No matter what you’re counting down to, countdown calendars are a fun and festive way to celebrate! As with most things for folks who are gluten intolerant, finding a suitable advent calendar can be difficult, as they’re often filled with chocolate and other treats with gluten. That’s why making your own is a great option.
First, you will need to gather your supplies. You’ll need some brown paper bags, recycled cardboard tubes from paper towels, flat cardboard, scissors, glue, a sharpie and some white fluff.
Directions:
- Lay your cardboard flat, outline the shape of a house (with a roof) about 2 ft tall and cut it out.
- Cut your cardboard tubes to be 2 inches tall each so that you have a total of 24 pieces.
- Pre-trace the circumference of one cardboard tube on your brown paper bags and cut out 24 circles.
- Glue the tubes to your house as if they were the days on a calendar (this is where you’ll treats will go).
- Next, you’ll need to fill each day with a gluten-free treat. Some great options include chocolate, candy, and small toys or trinkets. To ensure that all treats are gluten-free, be sure to read labels carefully, double-check with the manufacturer if needed, or look for the GFCO certification mark. You can also make your own treats at home using gluten-free ingredients. Once you have filled all 24 days, use a black or white sharpie to write 1 – 24 on your circle cut-outs and glue them to the tops of your tubes.
- Decorate your calendar however you’d like—use stickers, markers, or other craft supplies to add a festive touch.
Making your own gluten-free countdown calendar is a great way to ensure that you can enjoy the holiday season without any worry. Plus, it’s a fun and creative project that the whole family can enjoy together. So why not give it a try this year?
