Making homemade jams and preserves is a great way to use seasonal fruits and enjoy their flavors year-round. However, if you or someone you know follows a gluten-free diet, it can be challenging to find commercially available jams and preserves that are safe to eat. The good news is that making gluten-free jams and preserves at home is easy and fun!

The first step in making gluten-free jams and preserves is to choose your fruit. Most fruits are naturally gluten-free, but it is important to check for any potential cross-contamination if you are purchasing pre-cut or pre-packaged fruit. Once you have your fruit, wash it thoroughly and remove any stems, seeds, or pits.

Next, prepare your jam or preserve mixture. Traditional recipes usually call for pectin, a natural thickener that is derived from fruit. However, some brands of pectin may contain gluten, so it is important to read labels carefully. If you are unsure whether your pectin is gluten-free, you can use alternative thickeners such as chia seeds or cornstarch. To make your jam or preserve, combine your prepared fruit with your chosen thickener and sugar, if desired, in a large pot. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly, and then reduce the heat and let it simmer until it thickens to your desired consistency. Be sure to skim off any foam that forms on the surface of the mixture.

Finally, it is time to can your jam or preserve. Sterilize your jars and lids by boiling them for 10 minutes, and then fill them with your hot jam or preserve mixture. Be sure to leave a small amount of headspace at the top of the jar, and then seal them tightly. Process the jars in a boiling water bath for 10–15 minutes, depending on your altitude.

Making gluten-free jams and preserves at home is not only safe and delicious, but also a great way to customize your flavors and experiment with different fruit combinations. So next time you have a surplus of fresh fruit, give it a try!
