From first dates to birthday parties, holiday get-togethers, and hangouts with friends, all these activities are supposed to be fun and exciting! So, who said you had to let living gluten-free affect your favorite activities? No one!

Sometimes, whether you’re trying to pick a restaurant for a date, attending a party, or even grabbing snacks for a get-together, you may catch yourself wondering, “What can I safely eat?“

Great news! Living gluten-free doesn’t mean you have to miss out on special events or spending time with your favorite people. With a little planning, open communication, and an understanding of food safety, you can enjoy your social life while keeping your health a priority.

Dating

First dates can already come with some nerves about making sure everything goes just right, so why add stressing about food to the mix? Whether you’re going out with someone new or just having a night out with your partner, living gluten-free shouldn’t have to limit your options.

One of the easiest ways to prepare, honestly, even for picky eaters like me, is to look at the menu before deciding where to go. Don’t be afraid to call ahead, either! Some restaurants may be able to accommodate your dietary needs or even prepare something that’s not on the menu. Just be sure to ask about gluten-free preparation and cross-contact.

If your date is choosing the restaurant, give them a heads-up about your dietary needs. Communication goes a long way!

Quick tip: Oh, and remember, not every date needs to revolve around food! Go to the movies, visit a park, go bowling, or play mini golf. There are so many other ways to spend quality time together! Having trouble bringing up your needs? Try something like this: “Hey, I’d love to go out to eat with you! I just need to make sure there are options for me, maybe we could look together?”

Parties and Social Gatherings

Parties can be a little trickier because you don’t always control what’s being served, but that doesn’t have to matter when you already have a plan!

Ask ahead if you can! If it’s a birthday party, girls’/boys’ night, or holiday gathering, ask what food will be served before you go. Never feel bad about asking questions. After all, it’s for your health! Bringing a snack is always a good idea. You could even bring a gluten-free dessert or dish to share. It’s a great way to make sure you have something safe to eat while sharing something delicious with your friends.

This doesn’t mean you have to avoid every buffet or shared snack, but it’s important to understand the risks of cross-contact. Shared chip bowls, dips, serving utensils, and buffet tables can all introduce gluten into otherwise gluten-free foods. How food is served really does matter!

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! It might feel a little uncomfortable, especially around new friends, but remember, you’re not being a bother by speaking up for your health. Ask about ingredients, whether separate utensils were used, and how the food was prepared. This could even be a great opportunity to teach your friends about certain ingredients and products they might not have realized contain gluten.

Food Saftey

Whether you’re grabbing food after school, going on a date, or hanging out with friends, food safety should always be a priority. Living gluten-free doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy all those things and more! Knowing what to keep an eye out for can really change your experience and help you feel more confident.

Always check your labels! Just because something looks gluten-free doesn’t mean it is. Take a minute to read the label and look for gluten-free labeling or GFCO certification. Sauces, marinades, dressings, and even some seasonings can contain hidden gluten. For example, traditional soy sauce usually contains wheat. I had no idea!

Even naturally gluten-free foods can come into contact with gluten during preparation. When eating out, don’t forget to ask about shared fryers, grills, and how the restaurant prepares its food. Taking a few extra minutes to stop and ask your questions can really make a difference.

Dating, spending time with loved ones, and staying on top of food safety doesn’t have to be a hassle! A little preparation and open communication can go a long way in putting your mind at ease, allowing you to focus on what really matters: having fun, making memories, and enjoying the people around you. Living gluten-free is just one part of your life, and it shouldn’t stop you from enjoying all the special moments that come your way!
