Beer can cabbage: The summer dish you never knew you needed!
Ready to have your mind blown by…cabbage? If you’ve never tried or heard of beer can cabbage before, you’re not alone! But we’re here to fix that problem just in time for summer grilling.
Beer can cabbage is steamed with beer from the inside out, slathered with barbeque sauce, and grilled to perfection. It’s a great vegetarian or vegan alternative to use for a BBQ burger/sandwich (of course doesn’t have the same consistency, but check out this great looking recipe: www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/beer-can-cabbage-sandwiches). Replace for gluten-free burger buns and gluten-free beer.
Tip: If you are unable to find a gluten-free beer that comes in a can, there’s a simple workaround. Purchase any other gluten-free beverage that does come in a can, drink the beverage, and rinse the can well. Then pour your favorite gluten-free beer into the can halfway and use for the beer can cabbage recipe.
Here’s what one of our gluten-free staff members had to say about trying this novel dish:
- It was absolutely a conversation piece at a BBQ – not what most people expect to see on a grill!
- The flavor of the beer permeated the cabbage, in a deliciously subtle way.
- Once nicely grilled, chop the cabbage up with grilled onion and a little more BBQ sauce for a tasty coleslaw alternative.
- Purple cabbage is visually lovely, and sweeter than green. Choose your cabbage depending on sweetness of BBQ sauce to be used, and personal preference.
